Purpose

Serve the world and live a good life

OVERVIEW

Purpose combines alignment and achievement to bring your gift into the world as an act of service.

When you attain full development, you'll naturally seek to serve beyond yourself. When every area shares that purpose, you'll live a good life.

Purpose is the compass that gives you direction. The individual, isolated self will never find satisfaction until it matures and contributes to the world.

What is purpose?

Purpose is the third foundation of mastery. It arises when alignment and achievement come into balance. On the Map of Life, it is the line where alignment on the left meets achievement on the right, with Service at the center. Alignment reveals your gift, achievement manifests it, and purpose brings it into the world with the intention to serve. This is the pinnacle of human development: to move beyond a whole but individual self.

Purpose develops through alignment, achievement, and Service. It's a great sign of maturity to be wholly focused on living a good life, because it will naturally result in service beyond the self. Saving the world, while one's own life is a mess, is a recipe for disaster. Both foundations must be balanced before you can serve. To find out why you're here, you need to live fully.

Purpose is always in relation to other life forms, both the human and the more-than-human world. This requires a mature self that encompasses all of life. It starts with individual improvement through developing the areas, balancing the poles, and bringing harmony to the foundations. This is a process without end, but through purpose we attain self-mastery.

Although human wholeness always carries the same architecture, your purpose is a singular north star that is unique to you. You carry an essential piece of the puzzle of the universe. But you need to grow and mature so that piece fits well with the rest of the world. To master yourself so you can serve others is a challenging path, but the reward is a good life.

A life without direction

Of all life forms on the planet, Homo sapiens seems to be in the most trouble. Where all animals know their place, people seem to be clueless about theirs. Purpose exists beyond the self. And only a mature being can relate well with the world. A lack of self-development causes chronic imbalance and results in being stuck. This leads to a life without direction.

The specifics of purposelessness differ, but it involves the underdevelopment of at least one of the seven areas. The logic is simple: if you have health and energy, clarity and discernment, wealth and power, connection and belonging, creativity and dreams, awareness and meaning, what is it that you would naturally do? You seek to serve and give back.

If you live fully then you want to contribute. The problem is that many people get stuck in their development. Neglect areas long enough and they'll blow up and cause trouble. You'll become obsessed with your own problems. When you lack direction, you won't fully develop the self. If you can't do so, you won't serve, and you'll rob the world of your greatness.

How to find purpose

The acorn is no less worthy than the oak. They're just in a different phase. The seed of your life's destiny already resides within you. It's the unfolding of your life that is your purpose. Purpose is found in the fruit that feeds, but also in the whole journey from seedling to tree. The progression from self-development to serving others is to live with purpose.

It's good to first bring harmony to the areas of alignment, so you find your gift. Then move to achievement, which manifests your gift. Purpose actualizes in the final step in self-development, which comes after all individual areas are developed, the poles balanced, and the foundations harmonized. You're then ready to move beyond the self and give your gift.

Purpose is the direction of your life. The path will wind. You'll have to double back from time to time, but continue walking. And remember that the journey itself is the goal. To walk the path of the good life is all you need to do in order to find your purpose. It's so simple, and so hard to practice. The purpose of life is to be alive. And life always seeks to serve beyond itself.

We develop the self to move beyond the self. To do so, you must develop each area, the poles, and the foundations. This is a kind of death and a great mystery. To be fully alive is enough. To be ourselves is enough. To live a good life is the ultimate purpose of man. And such a life, created through alignment and achievement, is marked by the act of giving your unique gift to the world in service.

The triad of purpose

Alignment

Relationships, Heart, and Spirit form your inner world. As they come into harmony, you gain belonging, dreams, and meaning through which you can create a life you love. Alignment is part of your being, feminine, and yin. If you don't know what it is that you want to create, you can never hope to hit the mark.

Alignment helps you find your gift. It is your unique place in the world, the image you were born with. It consists of your specific set of relationships, who you are in your heart, and your soul. If you're misaligned, you don't know who you are and inevitably go in the wrong direction. You'll live in fear instead of love.

Alignment comes first in the triad. To live with love takes tremendous work and is foundational to your purpose, precisely because it concerns the core of who you are and your unique place in the world. Should you create alignment first, building achievement becomes more difficult, because it requires much more specificity than isolating achievement for its own sake.

Service

True Service is rendered from a cup that overflows from wholeness. When each area and its set of relations is actualized, service becomes natural. This requires tremendous effort at first, and then it becomes effortless. If you're fully developed, you'll become of service, but should you actively try to force it, you will fail.

Service is the act of giving your gift to the world. That is your unique way of serving the evolution of life. It is present in all areas as space, like the hub in a wheel. First, you develop each area to a certain extent for self-gain. Secondly, you relate the areas to one another, and here Service comes into play. And thirdly, once that is complete, you act beyond mere self-interest, because the self now encompasses the world.

If you lack service, purpose cannot reveal itself. Perhaps you are aligned and can achieve, but the two do not move toward a singular aim. You then miss out on the lasting fulfillment that comes from giving your gift. Purpose carries both alignment and achievement, being and doing, yin and yang. If the foundations are in harmony through service, you will find your purpose.

Achievement

Body, Mind, and Matter form your outer world. When they harmonize, they give you vitality, discernment, and abundance to build lasting freedom. Achievement is doing, masculine, and yang. It doesn't matter how aligned you are if you lack achievement; anything you do will be mediocre, and your potential will be limited.

Achievement is how you manifest your gift. Although your gift is unique, the mechanisms of expression are varied. The method needs to be adapted to the time and place in history. But the deeper you master something, the better you can manifest the gift. Without achievement, you'll lack the freedom to live life on your own terms.

Achievement comes second in the triad of purpose. Only through direct contact with reality and taking action can you realize your purpose. The more aligned you are, the more anything you achieve will aid your purpose. But the greater your achievement, the more you have to sacrifice alignment. These are the macro-poles of purpose and are in tension with one another.

Common questions

Purpose is one of the three foundations of self-mastery, next to alignment and achievement. Alignment reveals your gift, achievement helps you manifest it, and purpose brings it into the world as an act of service. You're alive to serve the world in your own unique way.

You need to grow in maturity to find your purpose, because it requires you to serve beyond yourself. First, you need to develop each area individually, then balance the polarities, and harmonize them toward a single end. Your purpose will then reveal itself.

Your gift is your unique place in the world, the image you were born with. Alignment helps you find it, achievement manifests it, and purpose brings it into the world. Only you can discover it, on the journey toward self-mastery.

Service is pure space. It holds nothing of its own and therefore helps the other six areas relate to one another. It unites Body and Relationships, Mind and Heart, and Matter and Spirit so you may contribute. Its symbol is water: colorless, transparent, and the giver of all life.

Your career can be an expression of your purpose, but your purpose is always bigger than a role. Your purpose stays the same while your method for expressing it changes. You might uncover different aspects of purpose over time, but your role is a means, not an end.

Where Service is one of the seven areas, purpose is a foundation that combines alignment, achievement, and Service. Service is the act of giving and lives in each area, while purpose is the direction your life takes when alignment and achievement come into balance.
