Spirit Life Area

Awareness, faith, and meaning.

Awareness, faith,
and meaning.

OVERVIEW

Spirit increases your awareness, so you develop faith in the sacred and discover true meaning.

Through spiritual growth, we realize our true Self. This creates a direct connection with the divine, so you may find healing and surrender to life.

If we’re unaware of our true nature, we live in ignorance. We then perceive reality through a distorted lens, and our life becomes utterly meaningless.

What is the Spirit Area?

Spirit covers consciousness, healing, and surrender. It’s the great mystery of life. The deeper we commune with the divine, the more clearly we understand the reason for our life. Spirit is the force that animates everything in the universe. The Spirit Area is often neglected because it’s beyond the five senses. But the hunger for Spirit is equal to the desire for food, sex, and status.

The sacred has carried many names through the ages. Spirit is the upper pole of spirituality, reached through transcendence: realizing the true nature of the self beyond form, identity, and place. This seat of awareness allows us to recognize the universal truth of all religions. There is a part of divine essence within you that will one day, like a drop from the ocean, return to its source.

Soul is the lower pole of spirituality and is more often ignored. It is reached through inscendence and carries the image of who we truly are as individual parts of this divine presence. The meaning of your life is found both by going beyond the self toward Spirit and by descending into the depths of your self to reveal your ultimate place. Die before you die and realize there is no death.

Losing meaning in life

If you neglect what is far grander than yourself, life loses its meaning. It’s like we lock ourselves in a prison, throw away the key, and then wonder why it is so dark. You must not block the sacred from entering your life. That takes an act of surrender. The small self with its little pleasures will never satisfy the hunger for Spirit. If not fed, it can destroy your life.

There is a living space within us that remains a mystery. When we ignore it, we’ll try to stuff that empty hole with countless pursuits. Status, romance, and work then have to somehow make up for the perfection of the sacred. No achievement or pleasure will ever fill up this void. If God is dead, then man falls prey to his lower nature and becomes directionless.

The mystery is supposed to be there and demands space. When it is ignored, we start to fear death. And sweet death is around every corner, always with us, and cannot be escaped. Empty pursuits of economic growth, war, and destruction are attempts to satisfy this hunger for the sacred. We’re crying for help because we know that without Spirit our life is meaningless.

How to find meaning

Almost all spiritual practices include restraint and abstaining from worldly pursuits. Fasting from food, words, people, sex, substances, and civilization can open the door to altered states. Meaning only arises from direct relationship with the divine. There is a spark within that needs to be ignited. And once aflame, it needs to be continuously tended so it burns well.

The seat of awareness can be cultivated and realized. But because spiritual practices involve multiple areas, one must be very careful. Religion is fundamentally a path toward the divine, but as history shows, it’s easily misused. Yet, structure is important, so find a teacher, practice, or religion through which you can study, progress, and receive long-term guidance.

There are so many pitfalls along the road. This is where teachers and traditions can provide ample guidance. Yet the real guide is inside of you, so let the sacred into your being. For many people, suffering has been proven the fastest and most effective road toward liberation. But one can smooth out the process by showing up to the work and seeking the sacred.

Five pillars of spirituality

1

Consciousness

The seat of awareness beyond form, place, and time. Consciousness is the spark of life that exists within all things. It comes from God, and the more conscious we are, the more one we become with the divine. Being aware and awake in each moment is the practice, yet most of us live half asleep, never here, lost in thoughts about past and future. Spiritual practice wakes us up, and can move us beyond the self into altered states. Consciousness and the self are intimately linked, and the more consciousness grows, the more the sense of self expands. Awareness therefore plays an important part in the maturation of the self and teaches us to be present.

2

Communion

Direct connection with the divine. The more we can communicate with the sacred, the stronger the bond becomes. You cannot know what you haven’t experienced for yourself. If you wonder what’s real and what isn’t, direct experience is key. When practices do not foster or facilitate this connection, they’re best ignored. To receive direct instructions from the divine is not merely limited to priests, yogis, shamans, and sages. It is completely ordinary for a human to be in relation to Spirit, because you are a part of it.

3

Devotion

Reverence and dedication to the unseen. Humility is in many traditions the door that opens the relationship with the divine. We are small beings compared to the beloved. So do not only pray for benefits. Rather seek to give and bring alignment to yourself so you may be of greater help to Spirit. Once you know Spirit exists you may devote your actions to the higher realm in reverence for God’s love. This desire to honor God is a natural consequence of coming into direct contact with the divine, because it’s so sacred.

4

Healing

Restoring right relationship. We are all related to the spirit world. Every one of us carries a core wound that ensures a crack through which the divine light can come. Wholeness is achieved by collecting lost fragments of the self. This allows for greater communication with other spiritual beings. It is because of our wounds that we realize we need to move beyond the self and stand in relation to spirits. By healing ourselves we gain the ability to show up to the work and foster relationships with the spirits here on earth.

5

Surrender

Letting go and trusting God’s plan. It’s easy to resist and control life. But much of our effort is wasted on this lack of trust. Because Spirit is omnipresent and all-knowing, it makes sense to surrender your efforts into divine hands. When we do, far more potent changes can come about, and the more we act on the calls that come, the more blessed the results. We do not always know what’s best for us, so when we learn to trust we can release the fear that often blocks us from realizing the highest possible outcome for all life.

Five practices for meaning

1

Meditate

There are a thousand ways to alter consciousness, but meditation is among the most effective and safest. The many traditions that have carried the practice for thousands of years signify one thing—it works. Yes, it can calm your Mind, reduce stress, and improve relationships. But the real treasure is finding out who the Self is behind the self.

Sit down at a regular place and time every single day. Start slow, perhaps 5-10 minutes, and gradually increase over months and years. Consistency is key. There are countless methods and guides out there. Traditional practices are recommended, such as Vipassana, Zen, and Kriya Yoga. Note: I do not recommend Transcendental Meditation (TM) or using random internet videos long-term.

2

Pray

Find a physical and inner space to pray to the divine. Like any language, it takes a long time to become proficient, but do not let that stop you. Pray as if the whole village can hear you. Act as if God can see you. Do not wait until times of hardship, but make it a continuous conversation through your entire life.

Create a sacred space to pray. A sit spot in nature, an altar, or a ritual to help you remember. Sing songs and mantras, create prayer ties, make fire, speak out loud. Find a way of communication that resonates and feels natural to you. Pray fully with your body, emotions, voice, and thoughts.

3

Offer

Learn to give freely to Spirit. We tend to come to the divine only when we want something, but God is not Santa Claus. An offering seeks to give without expecting anything in return. A gift that expects is a trade, and the sacred does not work that way. Devotion becomes real the moment it costs you. Be humble and devoted.

Do one thing each day as an offering. Create spirit plates before you eat, light a candle, give away food or money, write poems, express gratitude. Start small and give authentically. You can do so for nature, deities, gods, goddesses, God, or any form of divine presence that resonates with you.

4

Shadow work

As we grow up, we stuff most of ourselves in a large bag that we drag with us through life. These demons can get very loud and cause a lot of trouble when not tended or when consciously ignored. But they are, in truth, allies that carry much of our wholeness. By integrating them, we heal our wounded selves.

Integrate your projections. Become acutely aware when you have a strong emotional reaction to something in your world that does not fit the situation. Become still and watch, rather than acting it out. Use practices such as dreamwork, active imagination, and journaling to go into the emotions and uncover your own suppressed qualities. These can be negative and positive.

5

Never close

Whenever you feel yourself closing your energy, relax and go deeper. Just go into it and realize that this is not worth closing over. Never close, regardless of what is thrown at you. True freedom comes not from circumstances but from being free regardless of the situation. If we are always open, then we live in peace and love all the time.

Notice when tightness arises in any part of your being that you can become aware of. Relax into it and open yourself to it. Let it move through you fully, again and again. Make it your constant practice to stay open no matter what. Let life move through you. You’re here only for a short time. Invite everything that comes knocking on your door as a long-expected guest.

Common questions

We fear death because we believe we are only a body and a story that ends. The ego is what dies, and when we are identified with it, we naturally fear death. The solution is to experience who you are beyond time, place, and body. This means to let go, again and again, until the fear altogether disappears.

The true Self is the part of you that is not bound by time, place, or personal story. You are not the voice in the head talking incessantly to itself. Behind it lies awareness, which is part of the divine essence. The practice of meditation leads to this realization.

The upper pole of spirituality is Spirit, and the lower is Soul. Transcendence is going beyond the ordinary self and realizing you are a drop in the ocean of Spirit. Soul is developed through inscendence. Coming into direct contact with your soul helps you find the unique image you were born with, your deepest identity. Together they create meaning in your life.

Surrender is letting go of control and trusting that life knows more than you do. It is non-attachment, not to be mistaken for detachment. It’s an active stance where you act without grasping. It’s when you stop fighting what is.

You do not need to be religious to gain spiritual insight. Religion is a map toward the divine, and there are many other ways. What matters is direct experience and sustainably cultivating a right relationship with that which is sacred.
